Autonomous Driving Test Driver

Role
The autonomous driving test driver plays a critical role in building the systems that will bring full autonomous driving to reality. These engineers collect high-quality driving data and evaluate autonomous driving models in real-world conditions on public roads. They possess exceptional driving skills and can consistently reproduce the precise driving behaviors we require, ensuring data quality is never compromised. During on-road evaluations, test drivers ride alongside ML engineers, providing instantaneous feedback on model behavior to accelerate the development iteration cycle. They also evaluate whether models exhibit dangerous behaviors, acting as a safety gatekeeper that enables Turing engineers to develop with confidence. This is a mission-critical role.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Collect driving data for autonomous driving AI systems
- Conduct test drives of autonomous driving models
- Report on driving conditions and observations after each test session
What Makes Data Collection Excellence
First, you’ll conduct data collection itself. You’ll follow pre-specified routes and drive according to engineer instructions. AI systems learn both good and bad driving habits. Therefore, your driving technique—acceleration, deceleration, and steering—must be optimal for AI learning.
As you gain experience, you’ll transition to supporting autonomous driving AI testing and evaluation. This requires knowing precisely when to intervene in the AI’s driving decisions. In all environments, maintain the high-standard driving behavior that Turing models as the ideal.
Daily Workflow
- Arrive at the test facility
- Receive briefing on the day’s route and important notes
- Conduct test drives (with regular breaks)
- Submit post-drive reports
- End of shift
*We’re looking for applicants with a valid driver’s license who enjoy long-distance driving. Reporting and basic setup are required, but driving comprises nearly all of the role.*
Why Work as an Autonomous Driving Test Driver at Turing
As a Turing test driver, you directly contribute to creating the future technology of full autonomous driving through the data you collect and the models you evaluate. You’ll work alongside world-class machine learning engineers and software engineers at the cutting edge of next-generation technology development.
In autonomous driving model development, collecting high-quality data is paramount—and that quality depends entirely on driver skill. This role demands exceptional driving ability, with the opportunity to continuously refine your technique through professional practice. Few careers offer the sense of contributing to the foundational technology of the next industry. By ensuring safety and enabling confident model development, you become the critical foundation supporting technological progress—a responsibility that brings deep fulfillment.
What We’re Looking For
Ideal candidates have exceptional driving skills and can consistently reproduce the precise driving behaviors we require. Beyond raw technique, you need intentionality about evaluating autonomous driving models and understand the importance of high-quality data collection.
On public roads, you must respond quickly to potentially dangerous model behaviors and maintain rigorous safety standards. Close collaboration with ML engineers and control engineers is essential—you must provide instantaneous, actionable feedback on model behavior.
Key Qualifications
- ADAS developmentexperience as an evaluation driver
- Professional motorsport racing or similar high-precision vehicle control expertise
- Exceptional driving skills with ability to reproduce consistent behavior
- Strong sense of responsibility for public road safety
- Purposeful approach to evaluating autonomous driving models
- Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with engineers
- Ability to provide precise, real-time feedback on model behavior
- Deep commitment to safe driving and quick response to model risks
Cross-Functional Collaboration
With ML Engineers
We conduct on-road evaluations of autonomous driving models together. ML engineers ride along during your test drives, observing model behavior and creating rapid feedback loops around your driving inputs, collected data, and model outputs.
The driving data you collect and generate becomes the evaluation metric for our models—it’s essential for measuring model validity. Your role is also critical for safety evaluation: assessing whether the model exhibits dangerous behaviors.
There’s a unique appeal to being at the front lines of development, running fast feedback loops with your own driving, collected data, and model results. Your driving directly becomes the measurement standard for model evaluation, connecting immediately to technological progress. And by ensuring safety, you enable ML engineers to develop with complete confidence—a deeply meaningful contribution to the development foundation.
